What are the classifications of wines and spirits?

The wine and spirits sector is governed by strict regulations guaranteeing the origin, quality and production methods of products. Depending on their category, wines and spirits must meet specific requirements regarding production, labelling and marketing.

  • Wines: wines are mainly classified according to their geographical origin. A distinction is made between wines with no Geographical Indication (VSIG), marketed under the term Vin de France, and wines with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) or a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which comply with precise specifications guaranteeing their terroir, production methods and authenticity.
  • Spirits: spirits cover various categories defined by their raw material and manufacturing process: whisky, rum, gin, vodka, cognac, armagnac, liqueurs and eaux-de-vie. Some also benefit from a Geographical Indication (GI) protecting their origin and traditional know-how.

Managing health and safety risk and compliance for wines and spirits

Wines and spirits are subject to strict regulatory requirements to guarantee their safety, quality and compliance. Analyses are used to monitor numerous parameters throughout production: contaminants, residues, physico-chemical parameters, authenticity, composition and microbiological quality where applicable.

Whether for winemaking, distillation, ageing or packaging, a suitable control plan helps secure manufacturing processes, meet French and European regulatory requirements, and ensure the quality of products placed on the market.
