What is treated wastewater reuse (REUT)?

Treated wastewater reuse (REUT) involves recovering treated water in order to reuse it for specific purposes, such as irrigation, cleaning or certain industrial processes. This practice helps preserve water resources while meeting regulatory and health requirements.

The quality of reclaimed water depends on several key factors:

  • The treatment applied: the performance of treatment processes determines the microbiological and physico-chemical quality of the reclaimed water.
  • The intended use: quality criteria vary depending on the use (irrigation, cleaning, industrial uses, etc.) and the associated regulatory requirements.
  • Analytical monitoring: regular monitoring verifies water compliance, ensures user safety and guarantees regulatory compliance.

Implementing an appropriate control plan is essential to secure reuse projects and provide long-term support to operators in their approach.

Manage health risk

The quality of treated wastewater must be monitored throughout the reuse process to ensure compliance and suitability for the intended use.

Our laboratory carries out the microbiological and physico-chemical analyses required by regulations and supports you in developing your control plan.

Thanks to our expertise, you can secure your REUT projects, ensure the compliance of your facilities and contribute to the sustainable management of water resources.

Regulations

In the food industry, the order of 8 July 2024 imposes specific requirements for the reuse of water in the preparation, processing or preservation of foodstuffs.

This applies to operators of any public or private company carrying out, for profit or not, activities related to the preparation, processing and preservation of foodstuffs.

For domestic uses (watering, cleaning, etc.), the order of 12 July 2024 on the sanitary conditions for the use of water unfit for human consumption for domestic purposes, issued pursuant to Article R. 1322-94 of the French Public Health Code, sets strict health conditions applicable to all stakeholders concerned: owners of internal water distribution networks, managers of establishments open to the public, water services, local authorities, etc.

The order of 14 March 2025 governs the use of water unfit for human consumption for specific domestic purposes within classified installations for environmental protection (ICPE). It specifies the quality criteria and technical conditions to be met to ensure health and environmental safety. The domestic uses possible depending on the type of water unfit for human consumption are set out in Annex I, which lists the associated quality criteria to be met.

Finally, for agricultural irrigation and watering of green spaces, the orders of 14 and 18 December 2023 introduce a classification of uses according to the level of treatment required.

Logistics

Our nationwide coverage, combined with a fleet of tri-temperature vehicles compliant with the NF X15-140 standard, ensures the cold chain is maintained and samples are transported under optimal conditions.

Phytocontrol’s sampling technicians are all qualified to carry out physico-chemical and microbiological sampling in accordance with the following standards:

  • FD T90-520: sampling technique for the health monitoring of drinking water.
  • FD T90-521: sampling technique for the health monitoring of swimming pool and bathing water.
  • FD T90-522: sampling technique for the detection of Legionella in water.

Each sample benefits from real-time traceability, from collection or sampling through to analysis.

Optimising our routes helps reduce our environmental impact while ensuring a responsive and efficient service.
