What is infant food?
Infant food covers foodstuffs specifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of infants and young children during the first years of life. These products are essential to support their growth and strengthen their developing immune system.
There are generally four regulatory categories:
- Infant formula and follow-on formula: Substitutes and supplements for breast milk (stage 1 and stage 2 formula).
- Cereal-based foods and baby foods: The first solid foods (baby jars, infant cereals).
- Food for special medical purposes: Designed for children with specific conditions or absorption disorders.
- Total diet replacement products: Intended for weight control under strict supervision.
Because young children’s immune systems are still fragile, this population is considered the most vulnerable. As a result, this sector carries major health and nutrition stakes.
