What is raw water?
Raw water is water taken directly from the natural environment (river, lake, groundwater, dam, etc.) before any potabilisation treatment.
Its quality closely depends on its geological origin and the impact of surrounding human activities (industry, agriculture, urban discharges).
There are generally four main categories:
- Surface water: Rivers, streams, lakes, dam reservoirs…
- Groundwater: Water tables, deep boreholes…
- Rainwater: Collected runoff water.
- Seawater
For water intended for drinking water production, raw water is analysed before treatment to determine its initial quality and content in order to treat it effectively.
Managing health risk
Protecting water resources and monitoring pollutants upstream are major environmental and public health priorities.
To ensure risk management from the point of abstraction, we support you in organising your control plan and help you keep up with regulatory changes (Water Framework Directive, prefectural orders) regarding contaminant analysis.
Regulations
The order of 11 January 2007 and its amendments set the sampling and analysis programme for health monitoring of water supplied through a distribution network, issued pursuant to Articles R. 1321-10, R. 1321-15 and R. 1321-16 of the Public Health Code.
Raw water must meet the quality limits and reference values set out in the order of 11 January 2007 and its amendments concerning the quality limits and reference values of raw water and water intended for human consumption, as referred to in Articles R. 1321-2, R. 1321-3, R. 1321-7 and R. 1321-38 of the Public Health Code.
