Objectives

Gain knowledge of GMOs (conventional and new generation) and understand the associated risks.

Know the key elements of current regulations

Master analytical techniques and strategy (methods and tools)

Know how to read an analysis report and interpret the results in relation to the regulations

Programme

1. GMOs targeted and their characteristics

  • Definition
  • Production methods (transgenesis, NBT)
  • Main GMOs found in the food industry and their origin
  • Regulations (including developments on NBTs)

2. DNA extraction methods (sample preparation)

3. Analytical methods:

  • Real-time PCR (Taqman or intercalating): principle
  • Qualitative and quantitative analyses
  • Marker screening (method performance)
  • Identification and quantification of GMOs (method performance)
  • Analytical strategy depending on matrix type

4. Validation of the overall analytical process (from the laboratory sample to the outcome of the PCR method (criteria used to characterise the performance of a method)

5. Analysis reports:

  • Understanding how to read the results of a test report
  • Understanding theoretical and practical LOD/LOQ
  • Knowing when to label the product analysed
