What are PPAM?
The PPAM (Perfume, Aromatic and Medicinal Plants) sector is exceptionally rich: it includes more than 150 plant species spanning over 500 product references. Thanks to their unique properties, these plants have become essential ingredients in many industries:
- Food: For flavouring and natural preservation.
- Cosmetics: For their active properties and fragrances.
- Food supplements: For their physiological and therapeutic benefits.
Among the products derived from PPAM, essential oils hold a special place. Through the distillation process, they concentrate the plant’s active compounds, but can also concentrate certain undesirable compounds, such as pesticide residues.
Managing risks and compliance
PPAM and their derived products are extremely complex matrices (known as “interfering” matrices). Due to their high concentration of aromatic molecules, they present major analytical challenges for non-specialised laboratories, particularly in terms of precise detection and quantification.
