What is animal feed?
Animal feed is the primary outlet for cereal production. It encompasses all nutritional solutions designed to meet the daily needs of livestock, including raw materials, nutritional additives and compound feed (mixtures).
To ensure the health, vitality and growth of animals, these feeds provide essential nutrients:
- Macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats, which are the main sources of energy and contribute to the body’s development.
- Micronutrients: vitamins, minerals and trace elements, essential for proper metabolic function.
The challenge is twofold: ensuring animal welfare and health while guaranteeing, by extension, the food safety of consumers of products from these farms. This approach falls within the “One Health” concept, which recognises the interdependence between animal health, human health and ecosystem health.
Managing health risk: from field to trough
The animal nutrition sector is exposed to a wide variety of contaminants that can affect the entire food chain. These include pesticide residues from plant protection treatments, heavy metals and dioxins.
Given these risks, the sector is subject to particularly strict regulations. These set maximum permitted levels for each type of contaminant to guarantee the safety of animal feed and, consequently, of animal-derived products intended for human consumption.
Managing health risk therefore relies on continuous monitoring of the production chain, from crops to trough, to protect animal health and consumer safety.
