What is a cereal?
Cereals are plants grown for their seeds. Their uses are varied, but they are mainly intended for human and animal consumption.
Cereals and pseudo-cereals come from different botanical families:
- Poaceae
- Polygonaceae
- Amaranthaceae
- Pedaliaceae
- Lamiaceae
Several stakeholders are involved in the cereal sector: producers, collectors and processors.
Cereals are found in many foodstuffs such as flour, semolina, pasta, rice and rusks. They form the basis of our diet, which is why regular quality monitoring is essential to prevent consumer exposure to hazardous substances.
