Alkaloids are toxic secondary metabolites. These organic compounds, naturally present in certain plant species, can be used as protection against environmental factors.
Their analysis is subject to a European Commission recommendation (No. 2015/976/EU), which provides for monitoring of potential food contamination that may be caused by Datura alkaloids. A second recommendation is made by the DGCCRF concerning ergot alkaloids (2012/154/EU).
