New analysis method for Camphechlor
Phytocontrol laboratory is able to offer a reliable and accurate analysis of Parlars 26, 50 and 62 of camphechlor across all products intended for animal feed.
Camphechlor remains a concerning contaminant in the environment and food chain today, despite its gradual ban since the 1980s. This particularly persistent pesticide is actually made up of thousands of chlorinated molecules, called congeners, identified by a “Parlar” code. Among these, Parlars 26, 50 and 62 are subject to strict regulatory limits in Europe.
Highly volatile, bioaccumulative and toxic, camphechlor is still found in certain plants, animals or fats, which represents a major concern for products intended for animal feed.
What regulations apply?
Maximum levels are set for camphechlor and its congeners in Directive 2002/32/EC on undesirable substances in animal feed. These are 0.02 mg/kg for fish and other aquatic animals and their derived products, except for fish oil where the maximum level is set at 0.2 mg/kg, and complete feed for fish where the maximum level is set at 0.05 mg/kg.
These maximum levels are expressed at 12% moisture. For other raw materials intended for animal feed, MRLs are set in Regulation (EC) 396/2005 on pesticides.
The Phytocontrol solution for camphechlor
Given the analytical complexity linked to the large number of congeners and possible interferences, the laboratory has developed a new reliable and robust method for the quantification of Parlars 26, 50 and 62 in all types of animal feed matrices: animal meals, plant materials, fats, complete feeds, or products intended for aquatic animals.
This method combines solid-liquid extraction with organic solvent, a purification step, then GC-MS/MS analysis, offering sensitivity and selectivity suited to current regulatory requirements.
Thanks to this advance, animal feed manufacturers and distributors have a high-performance tool to ensure the compliance of their products and strengthen health safety throughout the chain.
