What is a fishery product?
Fishery products cover all aquatic species and their derivatives intended for human consumption. This vast and diverse sector relies on different production and harvesting methods:
- Fishing: Whether carried out at sea or in fresh water.
- Fish farming: Farming fish in marine or inland environments.
- Shellfish farming: Farming shellfish (oysters, mussels, etc.).
Essential for a balanced diet, these products are an excellent source of key nutrients. They stand out for their high protein content (around 20% on average) and provide the energy and trace elements needed for the body’s proper development.
Managing health risk and compliance
Due to their environment of origin and their high sensitivity, fishery products are particularly exposed to risks of microbiological and chemical contamination (heavy metals, veterinary drug residues, toxins).
