What is a plant extract?
A plant extract, whether liquid or dry, results from the transformation of the plant drug by a process (infusion, digestion, decoction, percolation, maceration, leaching, ultrasound, supercritical gas) using a solvent.
The nature of this solvent and the physico-chemical extraction conditions will result in the selection of certain compounds. Most often, secondary metabolites are extracted while eliminating the plant’s structural compounds (starch, cellulose, glucose, etc.). This makes it possible to obtain a “concentrate” of active molecules that may have a biological effect.
We strongly encourage our customers to carry out botanical identification analyses upstream of the processing process. Indeed, extraction processes “erase” and/or “select” the specific markers necessary for identifying plant drugs through macroscopic and microscopic observations and organoleptic tests.
