Recall of infant products – Salmonella detection
On 24 January 2019, a range of rice protein-based infant nutrition products was recalled by a manufacturer following the detection of salmonella. These products come from a production site in Spain.
The French health monitoring system identified several cases of Salmonella Poona salmonellosis in infants under 2 years of age.
Four infants were infected with this same strain after consuming these products a few days before symptoms appeared.
400,000 boxes were recalled; the products had been distributed exclusively in pharmacies, via charities and online sales sites.
The day after this recall, another competing company whose products are manufactured at the same site in Spain withdrew/recalled 16,300 boxes of infant formula as a precautionary and preventive measure.
