Phytocontrol analyses matrine!
Phytocontrol is pleased to announce the expansion of its pesticide analysis offering with the development of matrine and oxymatrine.
Matrine is an alkaloid naturally present in certain plants that has been detected in fruit and vegetables grown in various countries.
At the last Standing Committee meeting on 21 and 22 March 2019, the German authorities indicated that the presence of matrine in food could present a potential risk.
The European Commission shared an information note on this substance, prepared and presented by the German authorities at this meeting. Monitoring of the presence of matrine in food products should be implemented by Member States. Coordinated control actions should also be carried out by national competent authorities, in particular on fertilisers.
DG Grow’s fertilisers working group is expected to rule on the presence of matrine in fertilisers.
The Phytocontrol solution
To address this emerging issue, the Phytocontrol laboratory is able to test for matrine and oxymatrine by LC-MS/MS with an LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg.
