New GMO maize DAS1131

Phytocontrol has the skills and COFRAC accreditations required to detect and quantify GMOs authorised in the European Union: maize, soybean, oilseed rape, rice, cotton, flax, sugar beet and potato.

The laboratory is now expanding its offering with the detection and quantification of the new GM maize DAS1131, deemed safe by EFSA and likely to be approved in Europe soon.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These modifications regularly raise questions due to their potential impact on human health, the environment and ethical issues. The main concerns relate to biodiversity, food safety, allergen risks, and the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

Regulations vary greatly from country to country: some impose strict labelling, others apply more flexible rules, or none at all. Within the European Union, a strict framework guarantees consumers freedom of choice: any product containing more than 0.9% GMOs must be clearly labelled.

European authorisations are valid for ten years, but only cover consumption, not cultivation. All products derived from GMOs must also comply with traceability and labelling obligations. To date, only one GMO is authorised for cultivation in the EU: maize MON810.
