Animal feed – or feed – refers to all raw materials, products and mixtures intended to feed farm or companion animals. It is an essential link in the food chain, as the health and performance of animals depend directly on the quality of their feed.

The raw materials used (cereals, oilseeds, meals, by-products, additives, etc.) must therefore meet strict safety and traceability requirements to guarantee not only animal welfare but also the food safety of products intended for human consumption.

Managing health risks and current regulations

Many substances can be present in animal feed: pesticide residues from raw material treatments, heavy metals, dioxins, nitrites, hydrocyanic acid and aflatoxin B1. To protect animal health and, indirectly, that of consumers, strict regulations govern the maximum levels of these contaminants.

• Directive 2002/32/EC: sets the maximum levels of undesirable substances in animal feed, expressed at 12% moisture.
• Regulation (EC) 396/2005: defines the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in raw materials intended for animal feed, such as cereals.
• Recommendations 2006/576/EC, 2013/637/EU and 2016/1319/EU: specify the recommended maximum levels for the main mycotoxins (DON, ZEA, OTA, FUMO and T2-HT2) in cereals, cereal products and compound animal feed.

The laboratory, accredited by COFRAC, specialises in contaminant analysis. Our teams support animal nutrition professionals in controlling their raw materials and finished products, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and contributing to health risk management.
