Cyanotoxin analysis under accreditation

Cyanotoxin analysis under accreditation

Phytocontrol works towards water safety and continues to innovate thanks to its multidisciplinary and eclectic scientific teams and a state-of-the-art analytical facility.

The laboratory already enables you to monitor and anticipate cyanobacteria proliferation in water. Phytocontrol is expanding its offer and developing for you a rapid method under COFRAC accreditation for the identification and quantification of microcystins, Nodularin, Anatoxin-a, Cylindrospermopsins and Saxitoxins in fresh and surface waters.

In a context of global warming, ecosystem degradation and increasing pollution from human activities, we are seeing an increase in cyanobacteria proliferation, which produces cyanotoxins such as microcystins, nodularin, cylindrospermopsins, etc.

These compounds are extremely dangerous for humans, domestic animals and wildlife.

There are three main groups of cyanotoxins, classified according to their effects on human health:

  • neurotoxins (anatoxins, saxitoxins)
  • hepatotoxins (microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, and nodularins)
  • dermatotoxins (lyngbyatoxins, aplysiatoxins, and lipopolysaccharides).

What does the regulation say about cyanotoxins?

Bathing and recreational water:
The ANSES report of May 2020 and DGS note 2021-76 on freshwater bathing and recreational fishing set the following thresholds for toxins:

  • Microcystins: 0.3 µg/L
  • Saxitoxins: 30 µg/L
  • Cylindrospermopsins: 42 µg/L
  • Anatoxins: ˂ LOD

Source water used for drinking water production:
The ANSES report of May 2020 on the risk assessment of cyanobacteria and their toxins in fresh water sets the following thresholds for toxins:

  • Microcystins: 0.2 µg/L
  • Saxitoxins: 0.8 µg/L
  • Cylindrospermopsins: 1 µg/L
  • Anatoxins: ˂ LOD

Drinking water:
The Order of 11 January 2007 and its amendments set the quality limits and reference values for raw water and water intended for human consumption. The quality limit for total microcystins (sum of all microcystins) is set at 1 µg/L.

As a leading player in the environmental sector, Phytocontrol supports you in the analysis of cyanotoxins in raw water and drinking water.
