Analysis of the trimethylsulfonium cation, an associated salt of glyphosate
An expert in contaminant analysis, Phytocontrol is able to quantify the trimethylsulfonium cation resulting from sulfosate treatment (one of the possible salts of glyphosate) across a wide range of products.
Sulfosate, also known as glyphosate-trimesium, belongs to the herbicide family and controls many annual or perennial grasses and dicotyledons.
It is a systemic substance whose downward circulation affects root systems.
This molecule is tested for under the European Control Programme for pesticide residues in foodstuffs. In the EFSA 2019 scientific reports, sulfosate (trimethylsulfonium cation) was notably found in cultivated mushrooms and grapefruit.

Regulations
Regulation No. 396/2005 sets MRLs for the trimethylsulfonium cation on various matrices such as vegetables, fruit and cereals.
For infant food (BBF), the applicable MRL is 0.01mg/kg on the finished product. This molecule may be requested as part of BBF sector control plans.
The Phytocontrol laboratory solution:
Phytocontrol meets regulatory requirements by performing the following analyses:
- Trimethylsulfonium cation resulting from the use of glyphosate-trimesium
- Glyphosate (and its degradation product AMPA) under COFRAC accreditation
Focus on Babyfood:
The infant food sector represents major health and nutritional challenges. Infants and young children are more exposed to health risks due to their relatively fragile physical constitution and their immune system, which is still developing.
The Phytocontrol Group supports you in your control plan for contaminant analyses with a multiresidue list dedicated to BBF with a low LOQ.
