New chlorate regulation!

The problem

Chlorates are pesticides belonging to the herbicide category. They have been banned in the European Union and in plant protection products via decision 2008/865/EC. The European Commission has agreed that the chlorate residues currently detected in foodstuffs result from these uses.

The regulation

Chlorates benefited from a default MRL (Maximum Residue Level) of 0.01 mg/kg on all foodstuffs and all animal feed listed in Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and its amendments. The publication of Regulation (EU) No 2020/749 puts an end to many years of exchanges between the Member States and the European Commission. They can be consulted in the European pesticides database.
