Analysis of chlorates, perchlorates and bromates in water

Phytocontrol has developed a new method for analysing chlorates, perchlorates and bromates in water using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

Following this year’s new regulations concerning these three molecules, we have optimised our analytical processes to meet the reduced limits of quantification.

It is in this context that our Research & Development department successfully developed analyses with LOQs of 1µg/L for bromates, 1µg/L for chlorates and 0.1µg/L for perchlorates, a guarantee of expertise and reliability for the Phytocontrol group.

What are chlorate, perchlorate and bromate?

Chlorates are pesticides banned in the EU. They can have several origins (environmental contaminants, for example, as they were long authorised as pesticides, by-products of chlorinated biocides, by-products of chlorinated processing aids, etc.).

Perchlorate is a contaminant that may occur naturally in the environment or result from human activity. It presents a contamination risk when fertilisers and irrigation water are used.

The presence of bromates in drinking water usually results from water disinfection treatment. They are formed by the ozonation of bromides or may come from impurities present in bleach. The health risks are numerous: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and a potential cause of cancer in humans.
