Microtox: water toxicity analysis

Microtox: water toxicity analysis

Phytocontrol offers you the opportunity to study the environmental impact of pollutants and their derivatives on living organisms thanks to a new rapid water toxicity analysis.

Our microbiology department relies on the Microtox Toxicity parameter, a test used to determine the inhibitory effect of a water sample on the luminescence of Vibrio fischeri, a non-pathogenic marine bacterium.

Water is a fundamental element in the life cycle of living beings, as it can be ingested or absorbed. Any contamination of water can therefore have harmful effects in the short or medium term.

Microtox test, Vibrio fischeri, bioluminescence: here’s how it works!

The Microtox test uses Vibrio fischeri, a non-pathogenic marine bacterium notable for producing natural bioluminescence. The test is based on the principle that certain bacterial strains emit light when healthy. When exposed to toxic substances, the amount of light emitted decreases. The higher the toxicity of the sample, the lower the light emitted.

Measuring the change in light intensity between healthy bacteria and bacteria exposed to toxic substances therefore indicates the presence of a toxin in a sample.

The Phytocontrol solution for analysing your water quality

Our Waters R&D department has developed an in-house method adapted from ISO 11348-3:2007 to perform the Microtox test.
We offer you an innovative and fast method to determine the presence of toxic substances in water that may inhibit the photoluminescence of Vibrio fischeri.
