Phytocontrol supports ICPE facilities for PFAS analysis
Phytocontrol has developed a PFAS analysis method using liquid/liquid extraction, in compliance with regulations on aqueous discharges from ICPE facilities, and this method is accredited by COFRAC.
PFAS have exceptionally stable carbon-fluorine bonds, resulting in very limited degradation and a strong persistent presence in the environment, particularly in groundwater, with potential risks to biodiversity. Contamination of water and food raises concerns about the long-term health impacts caused by these forever chemicals.
ICPE, or Installations Classified for Environmental Protection, are industrial or agricultural facilities that, due to their nature, size or location, are likely to present risks or nuisances to the environment or public health. These facilities are subject to specific regulations aimed at preventing and limiting the impacts they may have on the environment and health.
What does the regulation say for ICPE facilities?
According to the provisions of the Order of 20 June 2023 concerning the assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances present in aqueous discharges from ICPE facilities subject to the authorisation regime, it is required to analyse a mandatory list of 20 PFAS as well as an optional list including 8 other PFAS.
The main list concerns the following molecules: PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoDA, PFTrDA, PFBS, PFPeS, PFHxS, PFHpS, PFOS, PFNS, PFDS, PFUnDS, PFDoDS and PFTrDS.
The additional list concerns the following molecules: PFTeA, PFHxDA, PFODA, GEN X, DONA/ADONA, C6O4, 6:2 FTOH and 8:2 FTOH.
According to the application note for the order published on 20 February 2024: “All PFAS analyses must account for the entirety of the sample: particulate phase and aqueous phase. Consequently, it is not possible to carry out a “direct injection” of the sample into the analysis equipment, without any prior sample preparation method to take the particulate phase into account.”
