Nickel analysis and regulatory requirements

Nickel analysis and regulatory requirements

Nickel is an element naturally present in the environment, also found in foodstuffs, either naturally or as a result of human activity (pollution, processing methods, packaging, etc.).

In its 2015 scientific opinion, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) highlighted the risks associated with exposure to nickel: chronic effects, such as an increased risk of miscarriage, and acute effects, including eczema-type skin reactions.

In response to these health concerns, Regulation (EU) 2024/1987 strengthens the regulatory framework by amending Regulation (EU) 2023/915 on maximum levels of certain contaminants in foodstuffs. Specific limits for nickel are now established in several product categories:

  • Tree nuts
  • Vegetables
  • Algae
  • Oilseeds
  • Cereals
  • Cocoa and chocolate products
  • Infant food
  • Fruit juices

These new maximum levels will apply from 1 July 2025, except for cereals, for which the entry into force is set at 1 July 2026.

Important note: given the extended shelf life of certain foodstuffs or their derived products, products legally placed on the market before these application dates may continue to be sold until stocks are exhausted.

The Phytocontrol Group, an analytical expert in heavy metals, supports food industry stakeholders in the face of these regulatory changes, offering nickel analysis by ICP/MS technology under COFRAC accreditation. This state-of-the-art method guarantees optimal sensitivity and reliability to verify product compliance and anticipate future requirements.
