PFAS in Sludge and Soil: An Analysis Focused on Solid Matrices
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are particularly persistent contaminants in the environment. Used in many industrial sectors for their non-stick, water-repellent, or heat-resistant properties, they can be found in water, wastewater treatment plant sludge, and soil.
The use of sludge in agriculture is a particular cause for concern: the presence of PFAS in sludge can contribute to their transfer into the soil and various environmental compartments.
Phytocontrol offers a method specifically designed to detect 52 PFAS in sludge and soil, enabling it to support relevant stakeholders in their monitoring and characterization efforts.
Regulations
The circular dated April 27, 2026, establishes guidelines for testing for PFAS in sludge from wastewater treatment plants intended for agricultural use.
It calls for a series of measures, including:
- urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants with a capacity of ≥ 10,000 p.e. as of July 1, 2026,
- treatment plants with a capacity of 10,000 p.e. as of January 1, 2027,
- certain treatment plants that receive effluent from industrial facilities in the textile and paper industries.
This monitoring is intended, in particular, to better characterize the presence of PFAS in sludge intended for agricultural application and to identify appropriate management measures in the event of contamination.
This approach also applies to soil, particularly to better assess the presence and fate of PFAS after application.
