Bathing water

What is bathing water?

Recreational waters are untreated natural waters in which the public bathes and can practise water sports.

  • Environmental conditions: temperature, sunshine and weather conditions directly influence the growth of micro-organisms.
  • Attendance: daily use of facilities introduces organic matter (sweat, cosmetics, etc.) that alters the water balance.

Managing health risk

The quality of recreational waters changes according to weather conditions, facility attendance and the performance of treatment equipment.

Our laboratory carries out the physico-chemical and microbiological analyses needed to monitor the quality of your water and check the effectiveness of the treatments applied.

With regular monitoring, you manage health risks, secure your facilities and ensure a welcome that meets the requirements of your activity.

Regulations

The quality of bathing water (fresh water and seawater) is assessed using bacteriological indicators, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci in accordance with instruction No. DGS/EA4/2022/168 of 17 June 2022.

According to the ANSES report on the risk assessment of cyanobacteria and their toxins in fresh water, where the profile of a bathing site requires it, cyanobacteria monitoring must also be carried out.

According to DGS instruction No. DGS/EA4/EA3/2021/76, if the threshold of 10 μg/L of chlorophyll a is exceeded, the cyanobacteria present in the water must be identified. If potentially toxin-producing genera are identified, the cyanobacteria are then counted (results expressed in biovolumes).
