ANSES has recently published an opinion on the health risk assessment related to the presence of diclofenac in water intended for human consumption (EDCH).<\/a>
\nDiclofenac is an NSAID very commonly used in France in human medicine for its analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.
\nCurrently, there is no quality limit for drug residues in drinking water, and testing for them is not included in the sanitary monitoring of drinking water.<\/p>\n

In a 2008 AFSSA report<\/a> on the prioritisation of drug residues of interest in water resources and treated water, diclofenac was identified as being of health interest.
\nIn May 2016, ANSES initiated a health risk assessment related to the presence of this molecule in drinking water, also as part of the Micropollutants Plan to preserve water quality and biodiversity (2016-2021).<\/p>\n

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main source of diclofenac in the environment, as conventional treatments do not fully remove the molecule present in wastewater.
\nAll treatment processes have the drawback of leading to the formation of numerous degradation by-products, including 4′-hydroxydiclofenac, considered a metabolite of interest and taken into account in the health risk assessment.<\/p>\n

Existing data on diclofenac concentrations in drinking water in France and Europe have shown levels of up to 114 ng\/L.
\nA guideline value (GV) of 0.4 \u00b5g\/L has been determined for diclofenac.
\nAll diclofenac concentrations reported in drinking water in Europe are below the GV adopted.
\nExposure to 4′-hydroxydiclofenac could not be assessed. In the absence of toxicological data for this molecule, it is not possible to establish a specific GV or to draw conclusions on the health risks associated with the presence of this metabolite in drinking water.<\/p>\n

The ANSES Working Group concluded that:
\n– The assessment carried out based on available data indicates no health risk associated with the presence of diclofenac at the exposure levels known in drinking water in France
\n– No toxicological data are available for 4′-hydroxydiclofenac. The quantitative health risk assessment for this metabolite could not be carried out, and it is not possible to establish a specific guideline value.<\/p>\n

ANSES points out that diclofenac is monitored in surface water in mainland France and overseas departments, and in groundwater in mainland France, under the order of 7 August 2015 amending the order of 25 January 2010 establishing the water status monitoring programme.<\/p>\n
