On 17 April 2019, the Order of 15 April 2019<\/a> on the water quality analysis programme and quality limits and references for artificial bathing waters was published in the JORF.
\nThis text is addressed to persons responsible for artificial bathing waters, municipalities, prefects and directors general of regional health agencies (ARS).<\/p>\n

According to Decree No 2019-299 of 10 April 2019<\/a> on the sanitary safety of artificial bathing waters, “artificial bathing water” means bathing water that is kept enclosed, i.e. water separated from surface water or groundwater by construction.
\nThese may be naturally occurring areas artificially modified (pond, water hole, oxbow lake, etc.), artificially created areas (reservoir, pond, dam, gravel pit, etc.) or pools built from hard materials (tidal pool, seawater pool, concrete pool, so-called “biological” swimming pool, etc.).<\/p>\n

This new order establishes quality limits and references for bathing water<\/u><\/strong> and fill water<\/u><\/strong> for artificial bathing facilities, as well as the procedures for carrying out sanitary checks.<\/p>\n

Quality limits and\/or quality references have been set for the following parameters:
\n– Escherichia coli<\/em> (MPN\/100mL)
\n– Intestinal enterococci (MPN\/100mL)
\n– Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/em> (CFU\/100mL)
\n– Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> (CFU\/100mL)
\n– Water transparency (metre)
\n– Total phosphorus expressed as P (\u00b5g\/L), only for artificial bathing water in closed systems
\n– Biofilm development on all bathing surfaces
\n– Cyanobacteria bloom (Cells\/mL)<\/p>\n

The parameters below must be analysed once before the start of the season open to the public, followed by fortnightly analyses during the open season:
\n– Escherichia coli<\/em> (MPN\/100mL)
\n– Intestinal enterococci (MPN\/100mL)
\n– Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/em> (CFU\/100mL)
\n– Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> (CFU\/100mL)
\n– Water transparency (metre)
\n– Total phosphorus expressed as P (\u00b5g\/L), only for artificial bathing water in closed systems
\n– Biofilm development on all bathing surfaces
\n– Temperature
\n– pH<\/p>\n

Lastly, cyanobacteria must be monitored on a monthly basis if the bathing water profile has revealed a risk of proliferation.<\/p>\n
