In its press release of 5 March 2019, the EU Council announced that it had adopted its position on the proposed revision of the EU directive on drinking water.
This future directive notably provides for:<\/p>\n

– A risk-based approach to water quality monitoring
– Amendment of water quality assessment criteria
– New provisions on materials in contact with drinking water
– Improved access to drinking water<\/p>\n

One of the major changes in this project is the updating of the standards currently in force for water quality (parametric values and analytical parameters). These standards were set 20 years ago and have not been revised since.<\/p>\n

At its plenary session on 23 October 2018, the European Parliament proposed amendments to the Commission’s proposal.
It is expected to establish its first-reading position for the second plenary session in March.
Interinstitutional negotiations are likely to take place during the Finnish presidency on 1 July 2019.<\/p>\n
