{"id":8309,"date":"2019-03-11T11:54:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T10:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=8309"},"modified":"2026-08-28T01:47:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T23:47:55","slug":"evaluation-of-the-transfer-of-biocidal-residues-in-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/evaluation-of-the-transfer-of-biocidal-residues-in-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessment of biocide residue transfer into food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regulation (EU) No <strong>528\/2012<\/strong> on biocidal products concerns the placing on the market and use of biocidal products, which are used to protect humans, animals, materials or articles against harmful organisms, such as pests and bacteria, through the action of the active substances contained in the biocidal product. This regulation aims to improve the functioning of the biocidal products market in the EU, while ensuring a high level of protection for human health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Biocidal products are divided into <u>22 product types<\/u>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>disinfectants (human or animal hygiene, surface disinfection, drinking water disinfection&#8230;),<\/li>\n<li>preservatives (wood preservatives, construction material preservatives&#8230;),<\/li>\n<li>pest control products (rodenticides, insecticides, repellents&#8230;),<\/li>\n<li>other biocidal products (embalming fluids, antifouling products)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under this regulation, the Biocidal Products Committee (BPC), at its February 2014 meeting (BPC-2), established and approved the mandate of the ad hoc Working Group on the Assessment of Residue Transfer into Food (ARTFood) to continue and finalise the guidance developed by the Dietary Risk Assessment Working Group (DRAWG).<\/p>\n<p>Since then, <strong>ARTFood<\/strong> has drafted and finalised the following proposals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guidance on Estimating Livestock Exposure to Active Substances used in Biocidal Products<\/li>\n<li>Guidance on Estimating Dietary Risk from Transfer of Biocidal Active Substances into Foods &#8211; Non-professional Uses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both guidance documents are intended for industry and competent authorities.<\/p>\n<p>A third draft guidance document is currently being drafted and will cover the assessment of the transfer of biocide residues into foods of plant and animal origin in contact with biocides for professional use (Guidance on Estimating Transfer of Biocidal Active Substances into Foods \u2013 Professional Uses).<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the guidance document will be to determine whether an MRL assessment should be carried out for the biocidal product under evaluation. The amount of biocide residue in food will be estimated and compared against a predefined threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, the authority responsible for setting MRLs will carry out an MRL assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Phytocontrol laboratory, an expert in the field of analysis, supports you in setting up and carrying out your biocide residue tests.
