The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) adopted an opinion on 30 May 2001 on dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in food, setting a tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 14pg TEQ\/kg body weight (bw) for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.<\/p>\n

EFSA confirmed the conclusion of previous assessments that dietary exposure to dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs represents a health concern.<\/p>\n

Data collected in Europe indicate that the tolerable intake recently updated by EFSA is exceeded for all age groups.<\/p>\n

The main foodstuffs contributing to exposure to these substances are fish (particularly oily fish), cheese and meat.<\/p>\n

The expert panel has therefore set a new tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in food at 2pg\/kg body weight, a dose seven times lower than the TWI set in 2001.<\/p>\n

The reduction in the TWI is based on the collection of new epidemiological and experimental data, particularly regarding toxicity in animals, as well as new modelling techniques enabling the amounts of these substances in the human body to be estimated over time.<\/p>\n
