EFSA has published its report on 2016 monitoring results for residues of veterinary medicines and unauthorised substances in live animals and animal products.
\nA total of 710,839 samples were checked by 27 Member States. The non-compliance rate for 2016 stands at 0.31%, a rate comparable to the previous 9 years (0.25%-0.37%).<\/p>\n
The presence of unauthorised substances and veterinary drug residues in food constitutes a risk factor for public health.
\nThree main EU texts govern the rules applicable to veterinary residues and prohibited substances:
\n– Regulation (EU) No 37\/2010 sets maximum limits for veterinary drug residues in food-producing animals and products of animal origin.
\n– Regulation No 396\/2005 sets maximum residue levels for pesticides present in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin.
\n– Directive 96\/23\/EC establishes measures to monitor certain substances and their residues, mainly veterinary medicines, in live animals and their products.<\/p>\n
The products analysed in 2016 are as follows: cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, horses, poultry, rabbit, farmed game, wild game, aquaculture, milk, eggs and honey.<\/p>\n
For group A:
\n– No non-compliant samples were reported for stilbenes and their derivatives (A1)
\n– For antithyroid agents (A2), 0.45% of samples were non-compliant.
\n– In the steroid group (A3), 0.09% of samples were found non-compliant (all for anabolic steroids).
\n– In the resorcylic acid lactone group (A4), 0.14% of samples were non-compliant for zeranol and its derivatives.
\n– Prohibited substances (A6) were found in 0.03% of samples. The substances identified were chloramphenicol, nitroimidazoles and nitrofurans.<\/p>\n
For group B:
\n– For antibacterials (B1), 0.17% of samples were non-compliant.
\n– In group B2 (other veterinary medicines), the highest proportion of non-compliant samples was found for NSAIDs (0.25%).<\/p>\n
