{"id":6686,"date":"2018-06-11T11:55:15","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T09:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=6686"},"modified":"2026-08-28T02:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T00:11:08","slug":"consumer-toxicological-risk-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/news\/consumer-toxicological-risk-assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxicological risk assessment for the consumer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>As part of pesticide residue controls in foodstuffs, the applicable regulation is Regulation (EU) No 396\/2005 and its successive amendments. This text defines the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for each pesticide-commodity pair, expressed in mg\/kg. Regulatory residue definitions may relate to a single residue but also to a sum of residues and associated metabolites.<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These residue definitions are revised frequently, and their implementation requires substantial material and human investment, which our laboratory makes a point of honour to meet.<br\/> MRLs are used to determine whether a sample is compliant or non-compliant. In the case of a non-compliant sample, exceeding the MRL does not necessarily imply a toxicological risk for the consumer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to carry out a calculation to assess the acute toxicological risk for the consumer.<br\/> This assessment consists of comparing the toxicity data for the pesticide (ArfD) that exceeds the MRL with an estimate of short-term consumption of the non-compliant food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are the various parameters taken into account in the assessment:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ArfD: Acute reference dose expressed in milligrams of active substance per kilogram of body weight. This is a toxicological figure corresponding to the maximum amount of the detected pesticide that can be ingested by the consumer in one day without risk to health. This value is the reference point in the consumer risk assessment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parameters below are used to assess the amount of the exceeding pesticide that would be ingested by the consumer (PSTI or IESTI):<br\/> <b>LP:<\/b> Large Portion, expressed in kg\/day, corresponding to consumption at the 97.5th percentile for the food in question.<br\/> <b>U:<\/b> Unit weight of the food expressed in kg.<br\/> <b>FV:<\/b> Variability factor depending on the unit weight of the food.<br\/> <b>PF:<\/b> Processing factor or Peeling factor (determined as the ratio of residues in the processed\/peeled product divided by the residue concentration in the unprocessed\/unpeeled product).
