Regulation (EU) No 2018\/290<\/a> <\/strong>amending Regulation (EC) No 1881\/2006 on the setting of maximum levels for glycidyl fatty acid esters<\/strong> was published on 27 February 2018.
\nGlycidyl fatty acid esters are food contaminants found in vegetable oils and fats. These esters are hydrolysed into glycidol in the gastrointestinal tract.
\nEFSA concluded that glycidol poses a risk to consumers due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic properties.
\nMaximum levels for glycidyl fatty acid esters should therefore be set for vegetable oils and fats intended for placing on the market for sale to the final consumer or for use as an ingredient in food.
\nGiven concerns regarding the health of infants and young children, stricter limits have also been set for vegetable oils and fats intended for the production of baby food and cereal-based foods for infants and young children, as well as for infant formula, follow-on formula and food for special medical purposes for infants and young children.
\nRegarding 3-MCPD and its fatty acid esters, EFSA has reopened its assessment; regulatory measures may be taken depending on the results of this assessment.
\nUnder Article 2 of the regulation, foodstuffs placed on the market before the regulation’s entry into force may remain on the market until 19 September 2018.
\nThe regulation enters into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.<\/p>\n

Our laboratory is currently able to determine 2-MCPD, 3-MCPD and free Glycidol content by GC-MS\/MS with a limit of quantification of 10 \u00b5g\/kg in plant-based products and infant formula.
\nAnalysis of soy sauce, hydrolysed vegetable proteins and infant formula is available under accreditation.
\nWe are currently working on developing a method for the analysis of glycidyl fatty acid esters.<\/p>\n
