EFSA has just published its annual report on pesticide residues in food for 2010.
\nThe report presents the results of controls carried out in 2010 in the 27 Member States and two EFTA (European Free Trade Association) countries: Iceland and Norway.
\nJust over 77,000 samples, representing more than 500 different types of food, were analysed for pesticide residues by the competent national authorities.
\nIn each European country, and in accordance with regulations, two types of control programme are implemented: a control at national level (managed by each country) and a programme coordinated by the European Union, for which specific controls are required.<\/p>\n
Under the EU-coordinated programme<\/strong>, 178 pesticides were analysed in 2010: 157 on plant matrices and 34 on animal matrices. The European programme set up controls on the following matrices: apples, head cabbages, leeks, lettuces, milk, peaches, pears, oats, rye, strawberries, pig meat and tomatoes. Regarding the national control plans<\/strong> carried out in 2010, 97.2% of the samples analysed were found compliant with European regulations (
\nOf the 12,168 samples taken and analysed across the EU, 1.6% of samples were found non-compliant with European regulations (pesticide content > MRL), 47.7% of samples had levels below the MRLs and 50.7% were free of measurable pesticides.
\n143 pesticides were detected out of the 178 tested, and 73 showed MRL exceedances.
\nThe highest percentages of samples exceeding the MRL were identified for oats (5.3%), followed by lettuce (3.4%), strawberries (2.8%), peaches (1.8%), apples (1.3%), pears (1.3%), tomatoes (1.2%), leeks (1.0%), cabbages (0.9%) and rye (0.3%). In products of animal origin (milk and pig meat), no MRL exceedance was identified.
\nThe pesticide\/matrix combinations for which MRL exceedances were most often observed are: chlormequat on oats, dithiocarbamates on head cabbages and dithiocarbamates on leeks, amitraz in pears and bromide ion on lettuce.<\/p>\n
\nThe main MRL exceedances were detected on legumes (unshelled beans, for example), spices, nuts, table and wine grapes, leafy vegetables (lettuce for example) and fresh herbs.
\nThe pesticide\/matrix combinations most frequently showing MRL exceedances are: acetamiprid and dimethomorph on cabbages and broccoli, chlormequat on table grapes, dimethoate on peas, bromide ion on chestnuts and walnuts, pyridaben and fipronil on cabbages, carbendazim on lychees and yams, and isoprothiolane on rice.
\nBABYFOOD samples:<\/strong> 1,828 samples were analysed, 2% of samples had levels above the MRLs (0.01 mg\/kg by default, except for pesticides listed in EU Regulation 2006\/141, which has lower MRLs). The MRL exceedances were related to residues of captan, anthraquinone, cypermethrin (sum), chlorpyrifos, imazalil and pirimiphos-methyl.<\/p>\n
