\"Perchlorate<\/p>\n

Perchlorate was recently detected by the German authorities in tomatoes and grapes from Spain.
\nThese detections were notified to RASFF (the European rapid alert system for food).<\/p>\n

Ammonium perchlorate is a compound with numerous industrial applications: metal processing, pyrotechnics, paper treatment, etc. It can also be found in certain nitrate-based fertilisers such as sodium nitrate, as well as in sewage sludge and groundwater.<\/p>\n

In July 2012, ANSES published an opinion on associations between exposure to perchlorate ions in drinking water and thyroid function. Experimental studies suggest they may induce a thyroid hormone deficiency: http:\/\/www.anses.fr\/Documents\/EAUX2012sa0119.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n

The NVWA, the food and consumer product safety authority in the Netherlands, has recently introduced national action thresholds for perchlorate in various matrices. You will find these thresholds by clicking the following link: NVWA thresholds<\/a><\/p>\n

On 16 July 2013, the European Commission published a document setting a general limit of 0.5 mg\/kg<\/strong> for all food products; except for citrus fruits, pome fruits, roots and tubers, table grapes, spinach, melons and watermelons, where the limit is set at 0.2 mg\/kg<\/strong>, and 1 mg\/kg<\/strong> for leafy vegetables (excluding spinach), fresh herbs and greenhouse-grown celery: SANCO Perchlorate Guide (July 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n
