German authorities have carried out several recalls of hen eggs due to the presence of fipronil at levels above the maximum residue level. The contaminated eggs came from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

The MRL for fipronil in hen eggs is set at 0.005 mg\/kg under Regulation No 1127\/2014 amending Regulation No 396\/2005.<\/p>\n

Fipronil is an anti-flea and anti-tick substance commonly used in insecticidal collars for dogs and cats. It is banned for use in food-producing animals, as it is dangerous for the liver, kidneys and thyroid, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n

On 20 July 2017, European authorities had notified the presence on the Belgian market of eggs contaminated with fipronil (between 0.0031 and 1.2 mg\/kg).<\/p>\n

Following this notification, the BfR carried out a health risk assessment<\/a> of the fipronil residues measured in hen eggs. This assessment was based on an excess of the Acute Reference Dose (ARfD), which is 0.009 mg per kg of body weight for fipronil. The ARfD is defined as the amount of a substance per kilogram of body weight that can be ingested in a meal or over a day without appreciable risk to the consumer.<\/p>\n

Calculations were made using the highest measured fipronil level in eggs (1.2 mg of fipronil per kg of eggs). Based on this level and health reference values, the BfR reached the following conclusion: the ARfD for children is exceeded.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This does not necessarily mean that consuming hen eggs poses a real health risk, but it does indicate a possible health risk for children, requiring an adequate safety margin after consuming these contaminated hen eggs.<\/p>\n
