\"Limites<\/p>\n

In recent months, MOSH and MOAH mineral oils have been detected in various foodstuffs, making headline news.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the presence of these substances in food has three possible origins:
\n– contamination from the environment or from lubricants used in equipment
\n– intentional use of mineral oil as an additive or processing aid
\n– contamination from migration of materials and articles in contact with food<\/p>\n

In this context, back in July 2017 Phytocontrol announced the launch of a new MOSH and MOAH analysis method.
\nThe method developed in the laboratory is carried out by LC\/GC\/FID and enables testing for MOSH\/POSH and MOAH from C10 to C35, with limits of quantification of 0.2 to 1mg\/kg in wines, edible oils, cereal products and derivatives, and sugars.<\/p>\n

At present, no limit has been set under European regulations.<\/p>\n

However, the scientific committee (SciCom) of the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (AFSCA) has just published Opinion 19-2017, in which action thresholds for mineral oils in certain foodstuffs have been established.<\/p>\n

MOSH:<\/strong><\/span>
\nBelow are the action thresholds set for MOSH (C16-C35) in the edible part of the following food products:
\n– Milk and dairy products: 5mg\/kg
\n– Fruit and fruit products: 10mg\/kg
\n– Composite foods (including frozen products): 10mg\/kg
\n– Cereals and cereal products: 15mg\/kg
\n– Vegetables and vegetable products: 20mg\/kg
\n– Starch-rich roots and tubers: 20mg\/kg
\n– Snacks, desserts and others: 20mg\/kg
\n– Meat and meat products: 30mg\/kg
\n– Sugar and confectionery: 30mg\/kg
\n– Fish and fishery products: 60mg\/kg
\n– Herbs and spices: 70mg\/kg
\n– Animal and vegetable fats and oils: 100mg\/kg
\n– Legumes, nuts and oilseeds: 150mg\/kg
\n– Eggs and egg products: 150mg\/kg<\/p>\n

MOAH:<\/span><\/strong>
\nRegarding MOAH, the AFSCA has not set action thresholds due to toxicity data currently being too limited. It nevertheless recommends relying on the limit set by the BFR at 0.5mg\/kg of foodstuff for the MOAH fraction (C16 to C35).<\/p>\n
