EU Regulation No 1169\/2011 requires the inclusion of a nutrition declaration on foodstuffs. This nutrition declaration must be presented in table form (or, if space is lacking, in linear form) within the same field of vision, and must include the following data: energy value, and amounts of fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt.
\nThis table of nutritional values can be difficult to interpret, so the French government recommended introducing supplementary nutrition information intended to be clearer for consumers.
\nEU Regulation No 1169\/2011 indeed allows, under Article 35, the introduction at national level of supplementary forms of expression and presentation.<\/p>\n
The Order of 31 October 2017 setting out the supplementary form of presentation to the nutrition declaration recommended by the State pursuant to Articles L. 3232-8 and R. 3232-7 of the French Public Health Code was published in the Official Journal of the French Republic on 3 November 2017.<\/p>\n
This recommended supplementary scheme is known as the Nutri-Score. Its use is optional and relies on a voluntary approach by food businesses.
\nIt is based on affixing a graphic symbol featuring a scale of five colours (from dark green to dark orange) associated with letters ranging from A (“best nutritional quality”) to E (“lowest nutritional quality”).
\nThe published order includes, in its Annex, specifications for calculating the food’s nutritional score and classifying it on the five-colour nutritional scale.<\/p>\n
The calculation of the nutritional score takes into account two parameters:
\n– The so-called negative component “N” of the food. This negative component includes: energy density (caloric intake in kJ per 100 g of food), and levels of saturated fatty acids (SFA), simple sugars (in g per 100 g of food) and salt (in mg per 100 g of food)
\n– The so-called positive component “P” of the food. This positive component includes: the food’s content of fruit and vegetables, legumes and nuts, on account of the vitamins they contain, and its fibre and protein content (expressed in g per 100 g of food)
\nPoints are thus awarded for each component of the food based on the quantities of each parameter listed above.
\nExcept for specific rules and particular cases set out in the order, the Nutri-Score is calculated as follows: Nutritional score = Total N Points \u2013 Total P Points<\/p>\n
Classification of the food on the five-colour nutritional scale is as follows:
\n– Class A: score \u2264 -1, dark green colour code
\n– Class B: score from 0 to 2, light green colour code
\n– Class C: score from 3 to 10, light orange colour code
\n– Class D: score from 11 to 18, medium orange colour code
\n– Class E: score \u2265 19, dark orange colour code<\/p>\n
