In a Scientific Opinion published on 10 January 2018<\/a>, EFSA updated the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for 3-MCPD.<\/p>\n

In 2016, EFSA carried out a first assessment of the potential risks of 3-MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters (GE).
\nEFSA had concluded that GEs were genotoxic and carcinogenic compounds, meaning they can damage DNA and cause cancer.
\nEFSA decided to review its 2016 assessment after the UN Food and Agriculture Organization\/World Health Organization Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) published a TDI different from the one established in their 2016 assessment (TDI established by JECFA: 4\u00b5g\/kg bw).
\nThe method used by EFSA to calculate the initially provided TDI was updated using a new approach called benchmark dose (BMD)<\/a>.
\nThis reassessment resulted in a TDI of 2\u00b5g\/kg bw, closer to the TDI established by JECFA.
\nEFSA and JECFA used the same toxicological data but employed different benchmark dose modelling techniques.
\nDespite these technical differences, both bodies reached the same general conclusions on the possible adverse effects of 3-MCPD and on the level of concern for public health.
\nThis update only concerns 3-MCPD and its esters. The assessment carried out for GEs has not been changed.<\/p>\n

The laboratory is able to determine the 3-MCPD content in plant-based products and infant formula. Analysis of soy sauce, hydrolysed vegetable proteins, tea, cocoa and infant formula can be carried out under accreditation.
