{"id":544792,"date":"2026-08-27T02:49:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/efsa-sets-a-safety-threshold-for-pfas\/"},"modified":"2026-09-19T22:07:49","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T20:07:49","slug":"efsa-sets-a-safety-threshold-for-pfas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/efsa-sets-a-safety-threshold-for-pfas\/","title":{"rendered":"EFSA sets a safety threshold for PFAS."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> EFSA has just published a <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2020.6223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health risk assessment concerning perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PFAS are a group of man-made chemical substances\nused in a wide range of industrial sectors (including textiles,\nhousehold products, firefighting, the automotive industry, food\nprocessing, construction and electronics).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food can\nbe contaminated by soil or water that is itself contaminated and used\nto grow these foods, by the concentration of these substances in\nanimals via the feed and water they have consumed, by food packaging\ncontaining PFAS, or through processing equipment containing PFAS.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These substances are most commonly found in drinking water,\nfish, fruit, eggs, and processed egg-based products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exposure to these chemicals can have harmful effects on\nhealth.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tolerable weekly intake\n(TWI) has been set for four PFAS that accumulate in the body: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is set at <strong>4.4 ng\/kg of\nbody weight<\/strong> per week.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to EFSA\nscientists, children are the most exposed population group,\nand exposure during pregnancy and breastfeeding is the main\ncontributor to PFAS intake in infants.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This scientific opinion aims to help risk managers in their decisions on the best way to protect consumers against PFAS exposure through food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  And to stay up to date with all Phytocontrol news, join us on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/9369065\/\">LinkedIn <\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/laboratoirePHYTOCONTROL\">Facebook <\/a>pages!  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EFSA has just published a health risk assessment concerning perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food.
