{"id":544770,"date":"2026-08-27T02:48:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/two-pesticides-soon-to-be-banned-in-the-eu\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:48:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:48:34","slug":"two-pesticides-soon-to-be-banned-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/two-pesticides-soon-to-be-banned-in-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Two pesticides soon to be banned in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two active substances used on numerous crops will soon be banned in the EU: <strong>thiophanate methyl<\/strong> and <strong>mancozeb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32020R1498&amp;from=FR\">Implementing regulation (EU) 2020\/1498<\/a><\/strong>, published in the OJEU, confirmed the non-renewal of approval for <strong>thiophanate methyl<\/strong>, while EU member states voted for the non-renewal of approval for the active substance <strong>mancozeb<\/strong> at the Standing Committee on Plants (Phytopharmaceuticals \u2013 Legislation section) meeting on 22\/23 October.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two molecules are approved for numerous crops such as vines, cereals, fruit, vegetables, spices, herbal infusions and oilseeds.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA has classified mancozeb as toxic for reproduction, category 1B, and as an endocrine disruptor. The expiry date for thiophanate methyl was set at 31\/10\/2020 and the renewal application was withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Marketing authorisations (MAs)<\/strong> containing <strong>thiophanate methyl<\/strong> must be withdrawn by <strong>19\/04\/2021<\/strong> at the latest, and <strong>grace periods<\/strong> expire by <strong>19\/10\/2021<\/strong> at the latest.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the draft text, <strong>MAs<\/strong> containing <strong>mancozeb<\/strong> must be withdrawn <strong>6 months after the regulation comes into force<\/strong>, and <strong>grace periods<\/strong> may be granted for up to <strong>6 months after the regulation comes into force<\/strong>. The regulation will come into force 20 days after publication in the OJEU and should be published in December.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France currently has just over 90 plant protection products containing mancozeb.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MRLs for mancozeb are covered by the MRLs established for dithiocarbamates, which also include maneb, metiram, propineb, thiram and ziram, expressed as carbon disulphide (CS2). MRLs cannot be lowered individually for mancozeb without affecting the other substances in the dithiocarbamate group. Dithiocarbamate MRLs must be reviewed as a whole, since some substances are approved and others are not, while also taking into account other additional sources of CS2 (endogenous sources).
