ANSES has just published a scientific and technical support note on the presence of manganese in water intended for human consumption<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Manganese is an undesirable substance in drinking water in the sense that its presence is perceived by consumers from 20 \u00b5g\/L.<\/p>\n\n

Manganese also causes black particles in suspension in the water and stains on laundry or sanitary equipment once the concentration exceeds 20 \u00b5g\/L. It forms deposits in drinking water distribution pipes, with the possibility of subsequent release of manganese into the water, and it damages home drinking water treatment systems (particularly water softeners).<\/p>\n\n

The amended decree of 11 January 2007 sets a quality reference of 50 \u00b5g\/L for manganese in drinking water.<\/p>\n\n

In 2016, manganese levels above the quality reference were identified in drinking water in the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region. In this context, the DGS had asked ANSES to determine a maximum health value; a value of 60 \u00b5g\/L was proposed in 2018 based on an “infant” scenario, thus protecting the entire population regardless of age.<\/p>\n\n

However, 650 distribution units are affected by manganese concentrations above the health value proposed by ANSES. The DGS therefore asked ANSES again in September 2018 for management values for children and adults, to allow for appropriate management depending on the population concerned.<\/p>\n\n

Here are the support values calculated for six age groups:<\/p>\n\n

\n [18-80[ years\n <\/td>\n 300\n <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n

ANSES points out in this note that exceeding the current quality reference (50 \u00b5g\/L) for this parameter in drinking water can lead to user complaints for aesthetic or organoleptic reasons, and that controlling hydraulic flows in networks is important to avoid resuspension of corrosion residues.<\/p>\n\n

Phytocontrol holds the national approval of the Ministry of Health for carrying out sampling and analyses for the sanitary control of water.<\/p>\n\n
