{"id":544736,"date":"2026-08-27T02:47:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/nutri-score-calculation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:47:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:47:50","slug":"nutri-score-calculation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/nutri-score-calculation\/","title":{"rendered":"Nutri-Score calculation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU Regulation No. 1169\/2011 requires a nutrition declaration to be provided on foodstuffs in the form of a table containing the following information:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>energy value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fat content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>saturated fatty acids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carbohydrates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sugars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>salt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As this table of nutritional values can be difficult to interpret, the French government recommended the introduction of additional nutritional information intended to be clearer for consumers, through a nutritional score called NUTRI-SCORE.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amended Order of 31 October 2017 defines the presentation format of the NUTRI-SCORE and the calculation methods.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its application is optional and relies on a voluntary approach by food companies.<br\/>It is based on a graphic symbol featuring a five-colour scale (from dark green to dark orange) associated with letters ranging from A (\u201cbest nutritional quality\u201d) to E (\u201clowest nutritional quality\u201d).<br\/>The published order provides, in its Annex, the specifications for calculating the nutritional score of the food and classifying it on the five-colour nutritional scale.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculation of the nutritional score takes into account two parameters:<br\/>\u2013 The so-called negative component \u201cN\u201d of the food. This negative component includes: energy density (calorie intake in kJ per 100 g of food), saturated fatty acid (SFA) content, simple sugar content (in g per 100 g of food) and salt content (in mg per 100 g of food)<br\/>\u2013 The so-called positive component \u201cP\u201d of the food. This positive component includes: the fruit and vegetable, legume and nut content of the food, for the vitamins they contain, and fibre and protein content (expressed in g per 100 g of food)<br\/>Points are thus awarded for each component of the food based on the quantities of each parameter mentioned above.<br\/>Except for specific rules and special cases set out in the order, the Nutri-Score is calculated as follows: Nutritional score = Total Points N \u2013 Total Points P<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classification of the food on the five-colour nutritional scale is as follows:<br\/>\u2013 Class A: score \u2264 -1, dark green colour code<br\/>\u2013 Class B: score from 0 to 2, light green colour code<br\/>\u2013 Class C: score from 3 to 10, light orange colour code<br\/>\u2013 Class D: score from 11 to 18, medium orange colour code<br\/>\u2013 Class E: score \u2265 19, dark orange colour code<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please find below the links to the two Nutri-Score orders:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/download\/pdf?id=pyLXld4S8MbrQnkdzFdY_Cw5UJagoAhIWSi4tlYHSno=\">Order of 31 October 2017<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/download\/pdf?id=JeaJecZmin3cqa0GgaubZumnznRWseQCeDltxJUlX6o=\">Order of 30 August 2019<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nutri-Score can be calculated either based on analysis results or on the values defined in the CIQUAL table.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Phytocontrol laboratory is able to analyse, under accreditation, the various parameters required for nutritional labelling.
