What is PBO?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)<\/strong> is a synergist<\/strong>. Synergists are chemicals that have no pesticidal effects themselves but enhance the pesticidal properties of other chemicals. PBO can be added to plant protection formulations containing pyrethrins or, more generally, compounds from the pyrethroid family. After ingestion by insects, PBO inhibits the secretion of certain enzymes and enhances the insecticidal properties of the plant protection product.<\/p>\n\n

What regulations apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In the EU:<\/strong>PBO is not considered an active substance within the meaning of EC Regulation No. 1107\/2009, and the default MRL of 0.01 mg\/kg set by EC Regulation No. 396\/2005 does not apply: PBO therefore has no MRL at European level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

PBO is authorised<\/strong> in plant protection products in Europe.<\/p>\n\n

France:<\/strong>French authorities have set a national MRL of 10 mg\/kg for cereals<\/strong> grown in France only. This MRL does not apply to imported cereals.<\/p>\n\n

PBO is authorised in plant protection products used in conventional farming but banned in plant protection products used in organic farming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The CNAB (National Committee for Organic Farming) decided at its meeting on 8 December 2015 to ban PBO in plant protection solutions used in organic farming in France, with a deadline of 30 September 2017 for using up existing stocks.<\/p>\n\n

Codex:<\/strong>Codex has set MRLs for piperonyl butoxide on certain matrices, including cereals, where the MRL is set at 30 mg\/kg.<\/p>\n\n
