<\/p>\n\n

Trans fatty acids<\/strong> are unsaturated fatty acids with at least one double bond in the trans position. These trans fatty acids can be naturally present in animal fats (meat, milk and dairy products) but can also be of technological origin (in which case they are used as stabilisers and preservatives). They can also form during the heating and cooking of vegetable oils at high temperatures.<\/p>\n\n

According to the scientific opinion adopted by EFSA in 2009, intake of trans fatty acids should be as low as possible as part of a nutritionally appropriate diet.<\/p>\n\n

The 2015 European Commission report highlights that high consumption of trans fatty acids increases the risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n\n

It concludes that setting a legal limit on industrially produced trans fatty acid content in foodstuffs appears to be the most effective measure in terms of public health, consumer protection and compatibility with the internal market.<\/p>\n\n

It has been established that trans fatty acids have harmful effects on health. This substance has therefore been listed in Annex III, part B, \u201csubstances subject to restrictions\u201d of Regulation (EC) No 1925\/2006 as amended by Regulation (EU) 2019\/649<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

This regulation was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 25 April 2019 and sets a regulatory limit for trans fatty acids of 2g\/100g<\/strong> of fat in foodstuffs intended for the final consumer and for retail sale. This limit does not take into account trans fatty acids naturally present in fats of animal origin.<\/p>\n\n

Information regarding a trans fatty acid content above 2g\/100g of fat (other than those naturally present in fats of animal origin) must be provided to food business operators when the foodstuffs are not intended for the final consumer or for retail sale.<\/p>\n\n

Foodstuffs that do not comply with the limit set may no longer be placed on the market from 2 April 2021.<\/p>\n\n
