{"id":544654,"date":"2026-08-27T02:26:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/anses-opinion-on-the-relevance-of-re-assessing-the-risks-associated-with-perchlorate-in-drinking-water\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:26:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:26:13","slug":"anses-opinion-on-the-relevance-of-re-assessing-the-risks-associated-with-perchlorate-in-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/anses-opinion-on-the-relevance-of-re-assessing-the-risks-associated-with-perchlorate-in-drinking-water\/","title":{"rendered":"ANSES opinion on the relevance of re-assessing the risks associated with perchlorate in drinking water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 16 April 2021, ANSES published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anses.fr\/fr\/system\/files\/VSR2019SA0116.pdf\">opinion on the relevance of re-assessing the health risks associated with the presence of perchlorate ions in water intended for human consumption, in light of the US EPA&#8217;s work published on 23 May 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 23 May 2019, the US EPA published proposed toxicological reference values (TRVs) for perchlorate ions and management values for drinking water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having adopted a method that differs from that used by all North American, European and international health risk assessment agencies establishing TRVs, the US EPA suggested adopting a TRV of 2.2 \u00b5g.kg bw-1.d-1, i.e. a management value of 56 \u00b5g.L-1 for perchlorate ions in drinking water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In light of these findings, the DGS asked ANSES to re-examine the health risk assessment associated with perchlorate ion ingestion, in light of the US EPA&#8217;s work, to determine whether the current TRV defined by ANSES should be maintained or whether a new TRV should be established.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2011, ANSES proposed a chronic oral TRV for perchlorate ions of 0.7 \u00b5g.kg bw-1.d-1 (ANSES, 2011)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to analyse the TRV proposed by the US EPA, the working group carried out:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An analysis of the BBDR (Biologically Based Dose Response) model developed by the US EPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An analysis of the studies selected by the US EPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A literature update to identify data on associations between exposure to perchlorate ions and adverse effects or changes in thyroid parameters, published since ANSES&#8217;s opinion of 26 December 2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In view of the findings and uncertainties identified during this assessment, ANSES suggests retaining the current ANSES TRV of 0.7 \u03bcg.kg bw-1.d-1 adopted by the Agency in 2011.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that Phytocontrol holds the national approval of the Ministry of Health to carry out sampling and analysis for the sanitary control of water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details of our accreditations can be found in our COFRAC technical annex No. 1-6066.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-b626b680-a0a0-4e42-960d-cf3c866646d8\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
