{"id":544598,"date":"2026-08-27T02:05:36","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/who-updates-its-guidelines-for-bathing-water\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:05:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:37","slug":"who-updates-its-guidelines-for-bathing-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/who-updates-its-guidelines-for-bathing-water\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO updates its guidelines for bathing water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 13 July 2021, WHO published an update to its guidelines on recreational water quality: <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/342625\/9789240031302-eng.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">\u201c<em>Guidelines on recreational water quality<\/em>\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These guidelines are mainly aimed at national and local authorities, as well as other entities responsible for ensuring the safety of recreational water sites. They aim to protect public health by ensuring the quality of recreational waters.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key changes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emphasis is placed on preventive risk management through a site-specific water safety plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazards not related to water quality (drowning, exposure to sun, heat and cold) have been excluded from the scope of this guideline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consideration of ecosystem protection objectives and measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide also introduces indicators and guideline values for freshwater and brackish water bodies:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cyanobacterial biomass guideline values:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Vigilance level: 1 to 4 mm\u00b3\/L biovolume or 1 to 12 \u00b5g\/L chlorophyll a (with cyanobacterial dominance).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Alert level 1: 4-8 mm\u00b3\/L biovolume or 12-24 \u03bcg\/L chlorophyll a (with cyanobacterial dominance).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Alert level 2: scum or transparency &lt;0.5\u20131 m<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Guideline values for cyanotoxins:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Microcystin: 24 \u00b5g\/L<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Cylindrospermopsin: 6 \u00b5g\/L<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Anatoxin-a: 60 \u00b5g\/L<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Saxitoxin GVrecreation: 30 \u00b5g\/L<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytocontrol offers two complementary analysis methods for detecting cyanobacteria in water:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A conventional method of enumeration and identification of cyanobacteria in water by microscopy, suited to routine monitoring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A \u201cpredictive\u201d method, in partnership with Microbia Environnement, using genetic biosensors to track the dynamics of microbial population changes and identify the onset or decline of a bloom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
