{"id":544588,"date":"2026-08-27T02:05:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/new-eu-limits-for-lead-and-cadmium\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:05:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:24","slug":"new-eu-limits-for-lead-and-cadmium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/new-eu-limits-for-lead-and-cadmium\/","title":{"rendered":"New EU limits for lead and cadmium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two new regulations amending lead and cadmium levels in foodstuffs, set out in Regulation (EC) No 1881\/2006, have just been published in the Official Journal of the EU.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>LEAD<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead is an environmental contaminant found naturally but also resulting from human activities such as mining.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA found that lead was associated with developmental neurotoxicity in young children as well as cardiovascular problems and nephrotoxicity in adults. However, <strong>it was not able to set a tolerable weekly intake (TWI)<\/strong> as it did not identify a clear threshold below which no adverse effect can be assumed to occur.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32021R1317&amp;qid=1628580771132\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 2021\/1317<\/strong><\/a> lowers <strong>lead<\/strong> levels in <strong>offal<\/strong> and certain <strong>foodstuffs intended for special dietary use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maximum levels are now set for <strong>wild mushrooms, fresh ginger and turmeric, wine liqueurs, spices and salt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levels have been set for spices to combat fraudulent practices such as the addition of lead chromate to turmeric.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These levels will apply from <strong><u>30\/08\/2021<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>CADMIUM<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cadmium is an environmental contaminant found naturally (volcanic emissions, rock erosion) but also through industry and agriculture. It is present in air, soil and water and can accumulate in plants and animals.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFSA concluded that cadmium is mainly toxic to the kidneys and established a tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of <strong>2.5 \u00b5g\/kg body weight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32021R1323&amp;qid=1628675305865\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 2021\/1323<\/strong><\/a> lowers <strong>cadmium<\/strong> levels in <strong>fruit, vegetables and cereals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nuts, dried legumes, oilseeds, salt and certain other foodstuffs for special dietary use<\/strong> are now regulated.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These levels will apply from <strong><u>31\/08\/2021<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 2 of both regulations specifies that foodstuffs legally placed on the market before the regulations&#8217; entry into force dates may remain on the market until 28 February 2022.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that Phytocontrol laboratory offers <strong>heavy metals<\/strong> analysis under COFRAC accreditation.
