{"id":544586,"date":"2026-08-27T02:05:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/new-regulatory-limits-for-ergot-alkaloids\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:05:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:21","slug":"new-regulatory-limits-for-ergot-alkaloids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/new-regulatory-limits-for-ergot-alkaloids\/","title":{"rendered":"New regulatory limits for ergot alkaloids"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ergot alkaloids<\/strong> are toxins produced by a fungus \u2013 Claviceps purpurea \u2013 a parasite of rye and other cereals.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of these substances in foodstuffs may cause <strong>adverse health effects and therefore present a health risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32021R1399&amp;from=FR\">Regulation (EU) 2021\/1399<\/a> amending Regulation (EC) No 1881\/2006 as regards maximum levels of ergot sclerotia and ergot alkaloids in certain foodstuffs has just been published in the Official Journal.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are the foodstuffs and associated limits for the sum of ergot alkaloids:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Milling products of barley, wheat, spelt and oats (with an ash content of less than 900 mg\/100 g): 100 \u03bcg\/kg then 50 \u03bcg\/kg from 01\/07\/24<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milling products of barley, wheat, spelt and oats (with an ash content of 900 mg\/100 g or more) and barley, wheat, spelt and oat grains placed on the market for sale to the final consumer: 150 \u03bcg\/kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milling products of rye and rye placed on the market for sale to the final consumer: 500 \u03bcg\/kg until 30\/06\/24 then 250 \u03bcg\/kg from 01\/07\/24<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wheat gluten: 400 \u03bcg\/kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cereal-based preparations for infants and young children: 20 \u03bcg\/kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foodstuffs that are legally placed on the market before 1 January 2022 may remain on the market until their minimum durability date or use-by date.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help <strong>producers, processors and manufacturers in the cereals sector<\/strong> comply with this new regulation, Phytocontrol laboratory offers <strong>quantification of these alkaloids using a specific HPLC-MS\/MS method<\/strong> under COFRAC accreditation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can consult our COFRAC technical annex No. 1-1904 available in your customer area or on the COFRAC website.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need technical, regulatory or pricing information?
