{"id":544582,"date":"2026-08-27T02:05:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/uncategorized\/publication-of-the-2020-rasff-annual-report\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:05:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T00:05:16","slug":"publication-of-the-2020-rasff-annual-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/publication-of-the-2020-rasff-annual-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of the 2020 RASFF annual report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2021-08\/rasff_pub_annual-report_2020.pdf\">2020 RASFF annual report<\/a> for products intended for human and animal consumption has just been published.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, <strong>3,862 notifications<\/strong> were transmitted through the RASFF portal, including 1,430 alert notifications, 572 information notifications for follow-up, 791 information notifications, 1,056 border rejection notifications and 13 news notifications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to 2019, the number of alert notifications involving a serious health risk increased by <strong>22%<\/strong>. The sharp decrease in border rejection notifications (-30%) most likely reflects the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global trade rather than on the controls carried out themselves.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HUMAN FOOD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Top 3 main hazards in foodstuffs from EU countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pathogenic microorganisms:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>788<\/strong> notifications were reported concerning pathogenic microorganisms, mainly in products of animal origin. This represents a 37% increase compared to 2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Salmonella<\/em> is the most frequently reported pathogen in foodstuffs from EU member countries (537 notifications, up 45%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em> in fish-based products was a significant cause of foodborne outbreaks in 2020 (32 reports). It was reported 31 times in meat and meat products, 25 times in milk and dairy products (including 13 in cheeses from France), and 21 times in poultry and poultry products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">29 notifications related to shiga toxin-producing <em>Escherichia coli<\/em> were issued. Contamination, of animal or human origin, is most often found in meat products (not heat-treated) (19 notifications) and cheeses (9 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were 50 notifications (up 100% compared to 2019) concerning noroviruses, of which 27 reported noroviruses in live oysters from France.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other hazard categories:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this category, the 3 most frequently notified hazards are food additives and flavourings (32 notifications), missing\/incomplete\/incorrect labelling (28 notifications) and poor\/insufficient controls (23 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most frequently reported food additive is sulphite, whose presence in crustaceans is often too high (11 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pesticides:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>166<\/strong> pesticide-related notifications were issued in 2020 (up 492%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This increase is mainly due to the incident concerning the detection of ethylene oxide in sesame seeds imported from India.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 9 September 2020, Belgian authorities transmitted the first notification regarding the presence of ethylene oxide detected in two batches of sesame seeds from India. This notification was followed by 315 others by the end of the year on the same subject.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to sesame seeds, other foods such as turmeric, ginger, amaranth, psyllium, okra, dried shallots and tea rice were also reported to contain ethylene oxide in quantities exceeding the applicable MRLs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These notifications continue to be reported in 2021.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Top 3 main hazards in foodstuffs from non-EU countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pesticides:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>667<\/strong> notifications were recorded.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, the most reported active substance in 2020 was ethylene oxide (347 notifications), followed by chlorpyrifos (48 notifications), pyridaben (43 notifications) and chlorpyrifos-methyl (41 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethylene oxide was mainly found in sesame seeds and derived products from India.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other pesticide residues were mainly found in fruit and vegetables. The country reporting the most was Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mycotoxins:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>400<\/strong> notifications were issued (down 23% compared to 2019).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aflatoxins are the most frequently reported mycotoxins in food (367 notifications). They were particularly detected in dried figs from Turkey (58 notifications), followed by peanuts from the United States (29 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ochratoxin A was mainly found in fruit and vegetables, particularly in dried figs from Turkey<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pathogenic microorganisms:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>289<\/strong> notifications were issued.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most concern <em>Salmonella<\/em> in black pepper from Brazil (61 notifications) and in sesame seeds (49 notifications).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ANIMAL FEED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of <strong>231<\/strong> notifications were issued.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notifications concerning animal feed represent around 6% of the total volume of RASFF notifications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pathogenic microorganisms:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All 102 notifications concern salmonella, in various types of raw materials, but also in pet food.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mycotoxins:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 22 notifications on mycotoxins concern aflatoxin reported mainly in peanuts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020 RASFF annual report for products intended for human and animal consumption has just&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":20928,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[181],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-544582","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-regulatory-watch"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.4 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
